A CALL TO ACTION: JAPAN NEEDS OUR HELP; GIVE WHAT YOU CAN

By James V. D’Ambrosio

Ten days into the horrific three-pronged disaster striking Japan — a magnitude 9.0 earthquake, tsunami, and ongoing nuclear crisis devastating the northeast section of the country and dealing a terrible blow to so many in the region — it’s time to focus on doing all we can to help. As a nonprofit professional committed to alleviating human pain and suffering, this column is a dedicated call-to-action to help the people of Japan during this extraordinary time of need.

The New York Times recently published a list of organizations accepting donations to help Japan. Please review the following and give what you can:

THE AMERICAN RED CROSS: Online at www.american.redcross.org or call (800) 733-2767.

AMERICARES: Online at www.americares.org or mail to: Americares, 88 Hamilton Ave., Stamford, Conn., 06902.

DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS: Online at www.doctorswithoutborders.org or mail to: Doctors Without Borders USA, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD., 21741.

GLOBAL GIVING: Online at www.globalgiving.org or text “JAPAN” to 50555 to donate $10.

SALVATION ARMY: Online at www.salvationarmyusa.org or call (800) 725-2769.

SAVE THE CHILDREN: Online at www.savethechildren.org or call (800) 728-3843.

UJA-FEDERATION OF NEW YORK: Online at www.ujafedny.org or call (212) 836-1486.

Not unlike the December 2004 tsunami that devastated Indonesia, the scope of the disaster indicates that parts of Japan will be recovering and rebuilding for quite some time. Long after the headlines and saturation media coverage fade, people will still be suffering. Consider your donation a small down payment on the long road ahead.
