本曲講述的是一戰(zhàn)末期的貝洛森林戰(zhàn)役(battle of belleau wood)。1918年德軍發(fā)動(dòng)皇帝會(huì)戰(zhàn)，同盟國(guó)與協(xié)約國(guó)在馬恩河附近交戰(zhàn)。其中美國(guó)陸軍第2步兵師(下轄一個(gè)海軍陸戰(zhàn)隊(duì)旅)、第3步兵師與其他英法的友軍，一同對(duì)抗駐守於貝洛森林的德軍。其中美國(guó)海軍陸戰(zhàn)隊(duì)在本次戰(zhàn)役中，因?yàn)橛旅拓夂返谋憩F(xiàn)而一戰(zhàn)成名，並被當(dāng)時(shí)的德軍敬畏地給予了「惡魔犬(德文：teufel hunden)」的稱(chēng)呼。
