【Invidia】I wouldn't have thought we'd find the way in to the labyrinth in a place like this...
【Apate】At last... I'm dog tired, and we haven't even gotten inside yet...
Having spent an entire morning just searching for the entrance to the labyrinth, Invidia and Apate lean back against the stone wall, exhausted and catching their breath.
【Apate】That damn Eros... I can't believe he left a sly fox like Quez all for us to deal with. This won't be a walk in the park!
They've come to the labyrinth tasked with capturing a fugitive from the Great War of the Gods - Quez, the God of Riddles.
【Apate】He's a real hermit. He spends entire days hiding out in his underground labyrinth, coming up with baffling riddles and booby traps so that nobody can get near him.
【Invidia】Eros sent us because he believes we can get the job done. If you don't think you're up to the task, then you should turn back now. I can handle a scoundrel like this all on my own. Not to mention that I'll score the jackpot and get Eros all to myself tonight if you do turn back.
Invidia's voice is ice-cold as she regards Apate expressionlessly.
【Apate】Jeez, lighten up! I never said I wasn't up to it. I know it'll be tough going, but just thinking about a night with Eros... Suddenly makes my batteries feel fully charged again!
Apate laughs off Invidia's suggestion, although her true motivation isn't the one she's just shared with her.
【Apate】(There's no way I'm turning back now... I came all this way for the extincthus flower...)
The extincthus flower is the most powerful of the seven deadly poisons known to the realm of the gods. Just one petal is said to be toxic enough to kill an elephant, and its nectar is a powerful inhibitor of divine powers.
【Apate】(Aphrodite says that Quez grows it at the center of his labyrinth so that he can use it in his lethal traps. And as long as I can swipe it...)
Concealing her true goal, Apate now concentrates on the task at hand.
【Apate】Let's go.
【Invidia】Remember what Eros told us, Apate.
【Apate】Yeah, yeah, I know! Quez's labyrinth has led many an adventurer to their death. Countless booby traps and hazards lie in wait, as do fabulous riches and precious jewels, set out as rewards for their seekers' wisdom and courage. That's what Eros said, right?
Apate repeats Eros's warning word for word, even imitating his way of speaking.
【Invidia】You've been warned. I don't want to have to save your ass on top of fighting this guy.
【Apate】Pfft, sure. I think you're the one who Quez'll have wrapped around his finger, Invidia.
With their energy restored, the goddesses bicker and natter away as they step inside the underground labyrinth.
【Explore 2】
What neither of them had expected is that they'd be plunged into difficulty as soon as they set foot inside the labyrinth.
【Apate】What's a huge treasure chest like that doing right inside the entrance?
After descending the stairway, the duo come face to face with a gigantic treasure chest that's almost as big as they are.
【Invidia】Looks suspicious to me... Must be a mimic monster, don't you think?
【Apate】You mean the kind of monster that disguises itself as a chest so that some dumb adventurer will happily jump right into its jaws? That'd be right in keeping with Quez's style...
【Invidia】That's precisely what he'd want us to think.
【Apate】Huh?
Invidia approaches the chest for a closer look.
【Invidia】Think about it. This is Quez, the deity of dilemmas, the God of Riddles. Would he really set such an obvious trap for us?
【Apate】When you put it that way, I suppose you do have a point.
The two of them nod at one another, apparently having reached a consensus.
【Invidia】So this chest is a test... If we weren't so smart, we'd have just walked right past a box full of treasures!
Brimming with confidence, Invidia throws open the chest's lid.
【Invidia】Hah?
【Apate】Eh?
With the lid wide open, a gigantic tongue pops out and instantly sweeps the both of them inside.
【Apate】INVIDIA!! YOU IDIOT!!!
Apate's screeched curses echo all through the underground labyrinth.
【Explore 3：Mimicry】
【Apate】The moment the battle begins, the surroundings are transformed by a kind of cognitive magic. We're clearly underground, so why does it look like we're in the middle of a forest now?
【Invidia】This magic is one of Quez's signatures. He's got it all set up so that as soon as someone tries to fight those duplicates, it triggers a spell that warps their perception of the environment.
【Apate】But what's the purpose of that...?
【Invidia】Maybe it puts all those duplicates on a better footing? Just look at the way they move. It feels like they're hunting in their natural habitat. Quez brought them into this labyrinth as a trap, but there's no way they'd be as effective and skillful down here in the dark as they would be on their home turf. So by restoring their natural habitat with that environmental magic, he's able to give them a hunter's advantage.
【Apate】I see...
【Invidia】Let's keep going. Who knows what other surprises are down here?
【Explore 4：分歧】
【Invidia】Solving a riddle just to be spat back out again? Who comes up with this stuff...
【Apate】We're lucky this is one of Quez's genetically modified mimic monsters. Otherwise, it'd have been game over before we'd even gotten started...
Wiping the mimic monster's icky saliva out of their hair, the duo observe the path they see before them.
【Apate】Hmm... There are two paths to choose from.
【Invidia】My intuition is telling me to go right.
【Apate】Have you already forgotten where your intuition got us just a moment ago?
【Invidia】You tell me which way, then!
【Apate】Hmm... Which way should we go?
【Explore 5：黑影】
Dark shadows are beginning to stir at the end of a corridor.
【Invidia】That aura... These guys aren't out to make friends with us.
【Apate】Yep. Didn't think we'd have to pull our combat gloves on this soon.
The two of them raise their weapons and slowly advance towards the shadows. However, when they finally see the faces of the figures clearly, both of them begin to feel that something's not right.
【Apate】Aren't these the baddies we dealt with back at those ruins earlier?
【Invidia】But their divine powers feel so different... Looks like it must be something else that's mimicking their appearances.
【Apate】Eww, that's grim...
【Invidia】Let's just take 'em down now and get on with our hunt.
【Explore 6：道路】
The thick stone door that stands before them slowly swings open at the lightest push.
【Invidia】Well, that was surprisingly easy. I was expecting another tricksy riddle or at least some bad guys or something.
Just as the two of them are breathing a sigh of relief, Apate notices something.
【Apate】There's some kind of symbol on each side of the door... Maybe it's referring to the two paths we had to choose between just now?
【Invidia】That's very possible. And if that's the case, then as long as we go through both sides, we're guaranteed to find the right way.
【Apate】That's a nasty little gambit. Only a real paranoiac like Quez could have come up with something like that...
They sigh and grumble at the labyrinth designer's malice as they pass through the doorway. And before long, an even bigger obstacle appears in their path.
【Invidia】This looks like an even bigger headache than a fork in the path...
Standing before them is a gigantic, ancient tree whose trunk is so thick and solid that it blocks the entire way forward.
【Apate】There's no way we'll get past here unless we chop this tree right down. But Quez has placed a curse all around the tree trunk to stop us from using our divine powers and magic on it...
【Invidia】Didn't you pick up a torch earlier along the way? When divine power won't hack it, we'll just have to use the laws of nature instead.
【Explore 7：Sudden】
Invidia sets the cursed tree alight with the torch. The raging flames quickly devour it from head to toe.
【Invidia】I knew that was no ordinary tree. It burned right up without leaving one bit of smoke or ash behind - poof, gone.
【Apate】I didn't realize Quez was so environmentally friendly.
They cackle dryly as they press forward, but quickly notice that something's not quite right about the path ahead. More specifically, there's something not quite right WITH the path ahead.
【Apate】What the hell...
【Invidia】It looks like we must have triggered a trap back there. When we burned up that tree, the stones all being held together by its roots all started to slip away, and then-
*Rumble* *rumble* *rumble*-
Before Invidia can finish, the stone slabs beneath their feet begin to wobble, and they both hear the sound of a gigantic crash.
【Invidia】Yagh!
【Apate】Invidia! Grab my hand!
Invidia realizes that the ground is rapidly falling away all around her, but before she can dash back to safety, she turns and sees that there's no sign of Apate at all.
【Explore：Inase 1】
【Invidia】Dammit... I've been separated from Apate...
Invidia pats away the dust as she observes her surroundings.
【Invidia】I should get back to her, and quick, but this looks like a totally different area from the one we were just in. That dastardly Quez must have planned to separate us all along...
Invidia curses the diabolical designer of the labyrinth as she considers the best way to tackle it.
【Invidia】Since there's no way to get back up again now, I'll just have to head deeper into the maze. How much trouble can Apate get herself into if I leave her alone for just a little while? If I don't hurry up and get going now, then who knows, maybe she'll even beat me to the finish line. And I can't have her gloating over me.
Having thought through her next steps, Invidia strides deeper into the labyrinth.
【Explore：Inase 2：Quez Time Part I】
After walking along the path for a little while, Invidia comes to a fork in the road.
【Invidia】Another split... What's Quez got up his sleeve this time...?
【???】Answer me this, traveler.
A nefarious voice suddenly booms down the passageway and rattles in Invidia's ears.
【Invidia】Speak of the devil, that must be him? Hey! Hey, you coward! Just what kind of a god are you, hiding yourself away like this? Quit hiding behind your tricks and games and come out and fight me if you've got the guts!
Invidia bellows at the top of her voice, attempting to provoke Quez's anger.
【Quez】Through all the ages, what is it that the gods fight for?
Quez's voice is calm and flat as if he hadn't heard Invidia's screams at all.
【Explore：Inase 3：選擇】
【Quez】Answer me this, traveler. Through all the ages, what is it that the gods fight for?
No matter how Invidia tries to provoke him, Quez simply repeats his question in an indifferent tone.
【Invidia】Okay, this is starting to sound more like a prerecorded out-of-office message than a personal DM.
Realizing her attempts to communicate with him are futile, Invidia turns her attention to cracking the riddle instead.
【Invidia】Through all the ages, what is it that the gods fight for? That's the whole thing...? Could it be some kind of trick question...
Invidia is bowing her head to think it through when she notices an inscription carved into the ground before her.
【Invidia】There are a few words marking each split in the road... I get it now! Each path represents a possible answer to the riddle. The correct answer will point the right way forward!
Having guessed at Quez's intentions, Invidia squats down and carefully inspects the answers marking each pathway.
On the left side is written: "For Love".
On the right side is written: "For Hate".
【Invidia】Hmm... Which way should I go?
【Explore：Inase 4-1："For Love"】
【Invidia】Eros started this war for Aphrodite... So as much as I hate to admit it, the answer has to be for love!
After careful deliberation, Invidia takes the path marked "For Love".
After walking a little way on, Quez's voice sounds once more.
【Quez】Incorrect. I didn't think anyone could get that one wrong. Do you really believe that love is such a great and mighty thing?
Quez's voice is full of mockery, stirring Invidia to anger.
【Invidia】You little... You'd better not let me find you, or I'll be delivering two knuckle suppers straight to your face!
Invidia howls and curses as she walks back to the fork in the road.
【Explore：Inase 4-2："For Hate"】
【Invidia】If it's war we're talking about, then surely they all fight out of hatred?
After careful deliberation, Invidia takes the path marked "For Hate".
After walking a little way on, Quez's voice sounds once more.
【Quez】Correct. In all their ignorance, the gods fight out of hatred. If you wish to know from whom their hatred springs... You must first confront the hate in your own heart.
And with that, a familiar figure appears in the distance.
【Invidia】Apate!
Having found her companion again, Invidia gallops off down the path.
【Explore：Inase 5：重逢】
Having found Apate again, Invidia strides up to her with annoyance.
【Invidia】Where have you been? Just how much time does it take to get through a simple labyrinth?
【Apate】......
【Invidia】Apate?
Looking into Apate's expressionless face, however, Invidia senses that something's not right. Just as Invidia is about to take a closer look at her, Apate suddenly raises her weapon at her.
【Invidia】Apate! Stop!
She wants to clear the situation up, but Apate clearly intends to kill her. Realizing the danger she's in, Invidia knows that her life is suddenly in the balance.
【Invidia】(It's useless! I'll just have to fight now and ask questions later!)
【Explore：Inase 6：Twins】
Just when things are beginning to look hopeless, Invidia finally manages to shake off Apate's attacks. She casts her alert gaze on Apate, now seriously wounded, not daring to lower her guard for even one moment.
【Invidia】(I don't even think this is Apate... Let's see...)
At first, Apate appears motionless, but then a flood of dark, sticky liquid spurts out of her wounds, pooling together on the floor into a slimy-looking heap.
【Invidia】It's another mimic monster... So that's your true form, huh...
A moment later, the ball of slime slowly begins to swell up, then assumes a human form, eventually approximating Apate's appearance. And now two totally identical Apates stand before her.
【Invidia】Thank goodness this stuff can't talk. Just imagine how annoying it'd be to have TWO Apates yapping at you...
Invidia forces a wry smile as she charges at them.
【Explore：Inase 7：Quez Time Part II】
With the Apate-mimicking monster defeated, Invidia continues pressing forward into the depths of the labyrinth. At the end of the seemingly never-ending corridor, she encounters yet another fork in the road.
【Invidia】What is it this time? Another of Quez's silly riddles, I bet.
【Quez】Answer me this, traveler.
Invidia rolls her eyes at that familiar opening line.
【Invidia】I knew it... Okay, let's hear it then.
【Quez】From whence does all evil spring, the puppet master pulling the strings?
【Invidia】Puppet master, huh... Let's see the options.
Invidia looks down at the ground. As before, the two paths are marked with two possible replies.
On the right side is written: "From Nothingness".
On the left side is written: "From Mirages".
【Invidia】Nothingness or Mirages...
Invidia sinks into silent contemplation.
【Explore：Inase 8-1："Mirages"is pulling all the strings】
【Invidia】Mirages... Could Apate be the real traitor after all?
After careful deliberation, Invidia takes the path marked "From Mirages".
After walking a little way on, Quez's voice sounds once more.
【Quez】Incorrect. I never thought such a loyal friend as Invidia could ever suspect one of her companions of such treachery.
Quez sounds as indifferent as ever, and yet he can't conceal the mockery in his voice.
【Invidia】You wanna smirk at me now, huh... Maybe it's not a recording after all?
Invidia's face turns red at Quez's derision, and she stalks back helplessly to the fork in the road again.
【Explore：Inase 8-2："Nothingness"is pulling all the strings】
【Invidia】Nope, I haven't the faintest clue... So I guess that means I should go with Nothingness.
Unable to make heads or tails of the riddle, Invidia tentatively steps along the path marked "From Nothingness".
After walking a little way on, Quez's voice sounds once more.
【Quez】Correct. The deity who was born out of nothingness has secretly brought this entire war to pass.
Though she's answered the riddle correctly, Invidia now notices something not quite right.
【Invidia】But Eros clearly told us that he sparked the war for Aphrodite. So why would Quez say that it was all the Lord of the Abyss's dark doings?
Invidia thinks it through from every angle she can come up with but remains totally flummoxed.
【Invidia】There's only one way to get to the bottom of this. I have to make it to the center of the labyrinth and get my hands on Quez himself.
Invidia sets off again, going deeper into the maze.
【Explore：Cartilla 1：幸運】
Apate and Invidia have gotten separated after setting the cursed tree aflame and activating its trap.
【Apate】Now Invidia and I've been split up... What a piece of luck! Now I can relax and look for ingredients for the poisoned wine!
Not even a little concerned for what might have happened to Invidia, Apate skips excitedly into the depths of the maze.
【Apate】She'll be fine by herself, I just know she'll find the way out before I would anyway. All I have to worry about is running into her again before I find what I'm looking for.
【Explore：Cartilla 2：疑惑】
As she progresses deeper into the maze, Apate encounters some odd enemies.
【Apate】That's strange... I clearly wiped those guys out back at the last turning...
Seeing their defeated corpses, Apate can't stop herself from cocking her head and thinking. And while she does, even more enemies pounce from up ahead.
【Apate】And I remember beating these baddies earlier, too... Are they clones of those other ones? Jeez, it just never ends! Come on, then!
【Explore：Cartilla 3：秘寶 Part II】
Apate discovers yet another treasure chest in a storeroom at a bend in the maze.
【Apate】Hmm...
Seeing the tightly shut wooden box with its rusty chain dangling to one side, Apate feels powerfully attracted towards it.
【Apate】Quez loves his mind games so much. Surely not every single one of the chests is a monster mimic? This must be the real deal!
Apate throws open the chest with a majestic flare and is instantly swept up into its huge, gaping maw.
【Explore：Cartilla 4：男神】
【Apate】Phew... Finally made it out of there.
Having freed herself from the chest monster's clutches, Apate finally crawls out from inside. However, she now comes face to face with someone she hadn't expected to see.
【Eros】I'm surprised you fell for such an obvious trap. Looks like you need a little more training to keep your guard up, Apate!
【Apate】Eros... What are you doing here?
【Eros】And what are you doing here?
Apate is puzzled by Eros's question.
【Apate】Didn't you send me here with Invidia?
【Eros】That's not what I mean. You're looking for something, aren't you? Something that wouldn't be good for me.
【Apate】W-whaddya mean? A-ahaha!
Apate's gaze flickers left and right as she searches for a quick escape route.
【Apate】(Does he know all about the poisoned wine already? No, there's no way. Play it cool.)
Regaining her composure, Apate looks Eros up and down.
【Apate】(Eros looks... a little different from normal... Let's test him out.)
【Explore：Cartilla 5：Traitor】
【Apate】Why do I feel like you look kinda different today, Eros?
【Eros】Because I'm heartbroken. My most beloved concubine is betraying.
【Apate】(I knew there was something up... Eros has never said he was heartbroken before.)
Now sure of her suspicions, Apate enters her combat stance.
【Eros】When it comes to traitors, you can never go too hard on them, wouldn't you say?
Wisps of magic congeal behind Eros, followed by countless enemies rushing out.
【Apate】They've got the same aura as all those duplicates about them... It's another of Quez's dirty tricks!
【Explore：Cartilla 6：秘寶 Part III】
【Eros】Oh? You're a tough nut!
Stepping up to the battle with every drop of her might, Apate tackles each and every one of the minions summoned up by Eros.
【Eros】I think you deserve a little reward!
Eros makes another summon, but now appearing before Apate is not another enemy, but a gigantic treasure chest.
【Apate】Hmph! You think I'm some kind of dummy? It's always a chest monster!
Just as Apate is readying herself to strike Eros, the treasure chest suddenly swings open and sweeps her right inside.
【Apate】QUEZ! YOU LITTLE CHEATER!!!
Apate's screeches echo all through the labyrinth.
【Explore：Cartilla 7：The Deal】
Apate finally escapes from the chest, but sees no sign of Eros at all. Noticing the remains of all the duplicates piled up on the ground, Apate instantly understands what's happened.
【Apate】Does this have something to do with you, Quez?
Apate offers her question to an empty passageway, but she knows that somebody's gazing right at her.
【Quez】You have a strong intuition for this place. I'd expect no less from the Goddess of Mirages.
As expected, the master of the maze returns her call.
【Quez】This labyrinth was built with my divine powers. From a certain perspective, it could be said to be an extension of my very soul. That means that from the moment you entered, you've been inside me.
【Apate】Do you really have to put it like that?
【Quez】And since you're now inside me, there's no concealing your innermost thoughts and desires from me. Goddess of Mirages, you covet my extincthus flower. It is the most toxic plant in all the divine realm. What on earth could Eros have done to make you want to use such a thing against him?
【Apate】You even know about that, too?
Apate is clearly a little shaken by Quez's ability to read her heart's desires, but she quickly recovers her calm.
【Apate】My apologies, but I can't tell you that. If you'd extend me the kindness of lending me just one flower, though, that would be wonderful.
【Quez】Normally I'd refuse you outright. But I'm quite interested in your motivations for wanting such a thing.
Apate tenses up nervously.
【Quez】Very well, Goddess of Mirages. Let's make a deal.
【Apate】A deal?
【Quez】That's right. In return...
【Explore 8：Reunited】
【Invidia】Quez said that the puppet master pulling all the strings is...
Invidia is still turning over Quez's riddle in her mind when a teleportation circle suddenly appears at her feet.
【Invidia】Dammit, another trap?
After a blinding flash of light, Invidia finds herself teleported to Apate's side.
【Invidia】Apate! Is it really you?
After struggling through so many solo battles, Invidia can't suppress her gladness at finally seeing her companion again.
【Apate】Yes, it's me.
【Invidia】What's the matter? Why the long face?
【Apate】I'm fine! I'm just worn out from so much fighting, that's all.
Apate is still somewhat distracted by her earlier encounter with Quez.
【Apate】Anyway, that's the end of the labyrinth up ahead. Let's go hand Quez's tricksy ass back to him!
The two of them bound ahead, ready to take on their final enemy.
【Explore 9：Trial】
【Invidia】So this is where Quez is hiding?
The duo now stand before the door in the furthest, deepest reaches of the maze.
【Apate】You can sense it too? Quez's divine energies are lingering right behind this door.
【Invidia】But he's the God of Riddles, after all. Don't you think this could be a trap?
Apate shakes her head at Invidia's concerns.
【Apate】Trust me. He's in here.
What Invidia doesn't know is that Apate has already come face to face with Quez, which is why she knows precisely where he's hiding.
【Invidia】If you say so. After you, then.
After shoving the great stone door open, they both step inside the final chamber.
【Quez】I've been expecting you. Come, claim your prize for solving my riddles!
Quez's divine power surges up, and their final test commences.
【Explore 10：Endgame】
【Quez】It looks as though... You've both found what you were searching for...
Defeated, Quez draws his final breaths, his feeble spirit alone retaining what's left of his figure.
【Apate】Let me perform the seal this time, Invidia.
Apate steps forward and takes the Relic from Invidia's hands.
【Invidia】That's new. Usually, you never want to get your hands dirty, Apate.
【Apate】I've had such a torturous time in this damned labyrinth, after all. I need the catharsis of doing this myself.
Apate throws out a made-up excuse as she seals away Quez's soul.
【Invidia】All right, mission accomplished. Won't this labyrinth crumble away to nothing now that its master's gone?
【Apate】If what Quez said is true, then it should do. We should hurry up and get out of here. There's no way I'm getting buried in the ruins.
【Invidia】Good idea. Let's get back to the Palace of Divinity and collect our reward from Eros!
The duo cast a teleportation circle at their feet to take them directly back to the Palace.
【Explore 11：The Secret】
【Apate】A deal?
Before she reunites with Invidia, Apate has some business of her own with Quez.
【Quez】That's right. In return... I'll give you the flower you're after, and guide you through the labyrinth, too. After all, you've found my dwelling already. If my fate is to be sealed away, then I fear there's no escaping it now.
Quez speaks with detached rationality, like a math teacher explaining a problem.
【Quez】But in turn, I want you to tamper with the spell on me, so that I'm not completely sealed. Then, when your betrayal is complete and Eros is sealed away, I'll recover my freedom again.
【Apate】Well, uhh...
Apate stares, her eyes wide. She hadn't expected that Quez would have planned so many moves ahead.
【Quez】What reason do you have to refuse me?
Quez's offer is very tempting, so much so that Apate could consider it a no-brainer.
【Apate】I can't think of any. All right then, we have a deal.
【Quez】Done. A word to the wise, Goddess of Mirages. A contract between deities is absolutely inviolable. Don't forget it, hmm?
With his warning hanging in the air, Quez's voice vanishes back into the depths of his labyrinth.

【Quez】Guess what you and a sprout have in common? Both of you are woefully inexperienced! Take this with you. We can talk once you've increased your level!

【Quez】Oh... There's no need to be so mean. After all, the desire for knowledge is just as important as the desire for sex~
