《Make It Up As I Go》是在《One More Light》這張專輯的創作期間開始創作的，但這首歌最終被廢棄，因為麥克和布萊德覺得這首歌的效果並不好。然而，當他在創作《Post Traumatic》的過程中翻閱舊曲目時，麥克覺得這首歌的主題符合他在專輯上想要的內容，所以他重寫了它並將其收錄在專輯中。
在2020年4月29日的一次直播中，麥克將《Make It Up As I Go》列為他在專輯中最喜愛的曲目之一。他解釋說，這首歌的主題是「心裡沒有確定的終點，只是沿著路隨意前行」，這種感覺令他深深地產生共鳴。
