FREE ONLINE MANAGEMENT LIBRARY FOSTERS PROFESSIONAL, ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

By James D’Ambrosio

Advances in technology and a global economy has accelerated the pace at which information becomes outdated — what was new and exciting 6 or 12 months ago can rapidly fade in importance. Therefore it’s imperative that nonprofit professionals find ways to stay current and expand their knowledge. Recently I discovered a free resource to accomplish this. The only investment is your time.

INTRODUCING THE FREE MANAGEMENT LIBRARY

The Free Management Library is an extensive online resource for nonprofit and for-profit entities indexing 675 topics and providing nearly 10,000 links. A project of the Management Assistance Program for Nonprofits (MAP) of Minnesota and Minnesota-based Authenticity Consulting, LLC, providing professional and organizational development services to companies in the U.S. and abroad, the Library began in 1995 and is an extremely popular business resource — many topics rank high in Google searches and the site averages 1,000,000 – 1,500,000 monthly visitors.

A FREE INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE

An informational and educational site, the focus is on free, practical information that can readily be applied, with links to articles about personal, professional and organizational development. (Authenticity does not own all articles in the Library; many articles are included as links to Web sites with content developed by other authors.) Nonprofit content focuses on fund-raising, volunteers, advocacy and public policy. The site also has assessments to help evaluate organizations, learning plans and journals to document progress, and a translation utility translating content into nearly 60 different languages. Visitors may also be interested in the Free Nonprofit Micro-eMBA, containing 12 modules to plan, develop and evaluate a nonprofit agency.

A WORLDWIDE COMMUNITY RESOURCE MANAGED BY PROFESSIONALS

The Library is designed as a free community resource, shared and contributed to by users worldwide. It’s estimated that people from nearly 80 countries use the Library. Moreover,  content is carefully screened: 10-20 articles are reviewed daily for accuracy and substance, and readers can notify the site of potential inaccuracies. If an article is found to be inaccurate — factually or substantively — it is removed. The Library is regularly updated by MAP consulting managers who are specialists in nonprofit management. Further, if you have a body of knowledge that can be helpful to others, as a contributor you can gain signficant international exposure.

RECEIVING UPDATES & GETTING HELP

The Library regularly adds links to articles and posts from a variety of blogs, that can be accessed by following on Twitter, an RSS feed, or e-mail subscription. There’s also a newsletter. If you need help using the system, inquiries can be submitted via an e-mail form. Managed by part-time volunteer administrators, it may take a few days to get a response.
