The Queen's Gambit creator on 'bringing sexy back to chess' and the series' long journey to TV

　

?It's taken almost 40 years for Netflix's limited series The Queen's Gambit to wind its way to the screen. The story was first published as a novel by Walter Tevis in 1983. The film rights were quickly scooped up, but the project languished in development hell for decades. For the last decade or so, it's been the passion project of writer-director Scott Frank.

　

網飛影集《后翼棄兵》花了近40年才輾轉登上銀幕，原著小說由華特戴維斯在1983年出版，電影改編權沒多久就被買走，可是，這部作品卻在「開發地獄」裡熬了幾十年，而過去十年來則是編導史葛特法蘭克致力投入熱誠的專案。

　

? development hell: 電影從提案到開拍前，劇本可能經過無數次的修改甚至砍掉重練，這段漫長而痛苦的過程稱為「開發地獄」

　

“The very first script I ever wrote was about the cost of genius, and I didn't quite get there with it,” says Frank, who wrote and directed every episode of The Queen’s Gambit. “I was too young, and I didn't quite understand what I was writing about. And when I read [The Queen’s Gambit] I thought, ‘This is a much better way to tell that story.’ This notion that she's both the protagonist and antagonist in her story, I thought, was really, really interesting, and chess was actually the perfect vehicle to tell this, [with] a chess genius.”

　　

編寫且執導了每一集《后翼棄兵》的法蘭克說：「我寫的第一份劇本是關於身為天才的代價，不過完成度沒有很高。我那時太年輕，不太懂自己在寫什麼。後來當我讀到《后翼棄兵》就在想：『用這方式來講那個故事好多了。』她在她的故事中既是主角又是反派，我覺得這個概念非常、非常有趣，而想要講這位西洋棋天才的故事，西洋棋正是完美的載體。」
