【翻譯】Portraying Your Heart　-畫心-

My best friend Daisy once asked me out for a movie called Painted Skin (畫皮).

I loved it so much that I decided to quote its theme song as the text

for one of the Translation assignments in my Bachelor's years.

I happened to find a notebook bearing the translated lyrics today,

and I'm feeling quite nostalgic:

《畫心》

"A Portrait of the Heart"

看不穿　是你失落的魂魄

猜不透　是你瞳孔的顔色

一陣風(fēng)　一場(chǎng)夢(mèng)　愛如生命般莫測(cè)

你的心　到底被什麼蠱惑

My gaze can't penetrate into your soul, which is at a loss.

I can't figure out the reason behind that glimmer in your eyes.

Like a breeze, or a dream,

love is as transient as life.

Who is the one that keeps you under her charms?

你的輪廓在黑夜之中淹沒

看桃花　開出怎樣的結(jié)果

看著你抱著我　目光似月色寂寞

就讓你　在別人懷裏快樂

Your contours are drowned in the darkness of the night.

I wonder what fruits the peach blossoms will yield.

Seeing you holding me with a look as lonely as the moonlight,

I'd rather let you indulge yourself in another one's arms.

愛著你　像心跳難觸摸

畫著你　畫不出你的骨骼

記著你的臉色　是我等你的執(zhí)著

我的心　只願(yuàn)爲(wèi)你而割捨

Loving you is an adventure as insecure as sensing your vague heartbeats.

Painting a portrait of you, I fail to depict your true emotions.

Bearing your face in mind, I am determined to wait for your return.

I am willing to suffer a deadly heartbreak for you and only you.

一陣風(fēng)　一場(chǎng)夢(mèng)　愛是生命的莫測(cè)

Like a breeze, or a dream,

love is the greatest transience in life.

你是我　一首唱不完的歌

You are a never-ending song of mine.

I have been told that

my literary translation does not flow naturally because I am obsessed with the idea of

doing it sentence by sentence, word for word.

After reading the English translation embedded in the following clip,

I cannot deny that the translator has done a better job than me

in creating a cultural context easier for non-Chinese speakers to understand.

There is always room for improvement. :)

VOCABULARY:

penetrate = 穿透, 洞察

transient = 一時(shí)的, 短暫的, 變幻無常的

vague = 模糊的

Dearest,

　　The two photos in this article were obtained from the movie. It's also where I got my inspiration of how 程御心 in 馭夫乘龍記 looks like.

　　The first photo depicts a girl cross-dressed as a guy (第三章開始), while the second one is her look as a girl (終局第九章).
